A Taiwan-based, new participant in 3GPP TSG-RAN WG2 meeting

I’ve never seen any new participant which is from Taiwan in 3GPP standard meeting in past few years.

But in the 3GPP TSG-RAN WG2 58bis meeting, I noticed that one new change request which issued from Sunplus mMobile Inc., a Taiwan based company, was accepted and subsequently became the CR 3061 (RP-070636) for 3GPP TS 25.331 Rel-7 specification, to revise an incomplete exception description in UE-based OTDOA.

This company, Sunplus mMobile Inc., named 凌陽電通 in Chinese, is a new startup IC design house, which was spun-off (originally from Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd.) in Hsinchu Science Park.

This CR is not an important contribution because UE-based OTDOA is a technology not in popular demand. (And also doesn’t have any patent in this CR) But it still shows that Sunplus mMobile can digest those 3GPP specifications and try to find out any issue which can be improved. This is not a easy job to do if you’ve ever took part in 3GPP standard meeting and knew the culture and game rules.

Anyway it’s so glad to see this new player which start involving in global standard body. Hope they can make something new and exciting.
